The Pretties Villages of Mallorca

Valldemossa

Just a 30-minute drive from Palma, Valldemossa is one of my favourite villages on the island. Surrounded by lush green hills and full of honey-coloured stone houses with green shutters, it feels like stepping into a storybook. It’s famously known for being a place of inspiration for composer Frédéric Chopin and writer George Sand, who stayed here in the 19th century.

The best way to explore is on foot. Wander through the narrow streets, pop into small artisan shops, and stop at Viewpoint II (second photo) for one of the best photo spots overlooking the village.

Restaurant tips

Deià

Tucked into the Tramuntana mountains, Deià has long been a favourite among artists and writers, including the poet and novelist Robert Graves. It’s easy to see why. The views here are absolutely magical, with dramatic cliffs and the sea sparkling in the distance. Spend time browsing the local galleries and ceramic studios.

Despite being a hilltop village, Deià is not far from the coast. Take a short journey to Cala Deià, a nearby cove with crystal-clear waters. It’s a fantastic spot for a swim or just relaxing by the sea.

Tip: Cala Deià is best visited in the morning or late afternoon. Parking is very limited and the path down can get hot in summer

Restaurant tips:

Sóller

Sóller, located in the island’s northwest, is surrounded by orange groves and majestic mountains. The central square, Plaça de la Constitució, is lively and full of local cafés. Keep an eye out for the vintage tram that rolls through, a lovely way to get to Port de Sóller on the coast.

Tip: book your ticket for the wooden train from Palma and the connecting tram to Port de Sóller in advance, especially in high season.

If you’re there on a Saturday, don’t miss the weekly market with stalls selling everything from handmade baskets to local cheeses.

Xapeta: a colourful tapas spot with a great atmosphere and friendly service

Fornalutx

Often called one of the prettiest villages in Spain, Fornalutx is a tiny stone-built hamlet surrounded by citrus orchards and steep hillsides. It’s quieter than Sóller and perfect for a peaceful morning stroll or a hike in the surrounding mountains.

There are a few scenic trails nearby, ideal if you’re up for a walk through olive groves and terraced hills.

Restaurant tips:

Pollença

Pollença is a village full of picturesque streets and its majestic mountains serve as a stunning backdrop. Make sure to climb the 365 Calvari Steps to the chapel at the top for breathtaking views. It’s a bit of a hike, but absolutely worth it! The village is full of charm, so spend some time wandering around, exploring local shops and cafes.

Tip: visit early or late to avoid the midday heat, especially in summer

Don’t miss the Pollença Market on Sundays, where you can find everything from fresh produce to local crafts.

Alcúdia

Alcúdia is rich in history and culture, featuring a beautifully preserved medieval town surrounded by ancient city walls. Take a stroll through its narrow streets and admire the historic architecture. After exploring the village, head to Alcúdia Beach, where you can relax on one of the island’s longest stretches of golden sand.

Nature lovers will enjoy the nearby Tramuntana Mountains, offering stunning landscapes and outdoor activities.

Cala Figuera

If you’re dreaming of a postcard-perfect fishing village, Cala Figuera is it. With boats bobbing in the turquoise water and whitewashed cottages built right into the cliffs, it’s the kind of place you’ll want to linger.

It’s a great spot for a laid-back lunch with a view or a peaceful seaside walk.

Restaurant tips:

Santanyí

Located on the southeast coast, Santanyí is a vibrant village famous for its weekly markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. These markets showcase local crafts, fresh produce, and artisanal products, providing a lively atmosphere that’s hard to resist. Explore the old town, where every corner reveals the village’s rich cultural heritage.

Santanyí is also close to stunning beaches like Cala Llombards (one of my absolute favourites), perfect for a day of sun, swimming, or just enjoying the Mediterranean vibe.

Getting Around Mallorca

To make the most of your visit, renting a car is highly recommended. While public transport is available, having a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. We rented ours from Hiper Rent a Car and had a great experience.

When to Visit the Prettiest Villages of Mallorca

Mallorca enjoys a lovely Mediterranean climate nearly year-round. The best times to visit are in spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these months, temperatures are comfortable, and the island is less crowded, and you can explore at a relaxed pace.

For beach days without the intense summer heat, late spring and early autumn are ideal, as the sea is warm enough for swimming, and you’ll avoid the peak tourist rush. Spring is also perfect for hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana, with blooming wildflowers enhancing the trails.

Autumn is perfect for experiencing Mallorca’s harvest season, with local markets offering fresh produce, wine tastings, and traditional celebrations that highlight Mallorca’s agricultural heritage.

Where to Stay on Mallorca

If you’re planning to stay for a week or more, consider having two bases: one on the west and another on the east. Even though the island isn’t that big, having two bases allows you to explore and experience the island more fully.

For a westward stay, Sóller or Port de Sóller are excellent choices. Both towns are centrally located with a variety of restaurant options. If you prefer a quieter retreat, consider Can Cota Boutique in Selva (photos below). Our stay here was one for the books!

For an eastern adventure, Cala Figuera or Santanyí are great options, close to beautiful beaches and lively town centres with plenty of dining choices.
